Deepavali falls on Sunday, 8 November this year. In states with a Saturday–Sunday weekend, Monday, 9 November is a replacement public holiday, which means a long weekend from Saturday, 7 November to Monday, 9 November.
Students in these Group B states get one more day. Under the Ministry of Education’s 2026 academic calendar, schools in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya are also closed on Tuesday, 10 November.
In Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu (Group A), where the weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, Deepavali itself on Sunday is the holiday, and schools get an additional day off on Monday, 9 November.
For working parents in Group B states, one day of leave on Tuesday, 10 November turns it into a four-day break from 7 to 10 November. The extra school holiday doesn’t automatically apply to private-sector workers, so check with your employer first.
Happy Deepavali to everyone celebrating! 🪔
