If you’ve been tracking this one, you’ll know the wait has been long. Jana Nayagan, widely billed as Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s final film as he now leads Tamil Nadu as its sitting Chief Minister, has finally released in cinemas today, 23 July — nearly seven months after it was originally supposed to hit screens for Pongal on 9 January.
So what actually caused the delay?
The film ran into certification trouble with India’s Central Board of Film Certification, which led to a legal back-and-forth through the courts before things were finally cleared. There’s also been public speculation about political undertones to the delay, given Vijay’s own recent full-time entry into politics through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) — though the makers haven’t confirmed that angle themselves.
About the film
Directed by H Vinoth and produced by Venkat K Narayana under KVN Productions, with music by Anirudh Ravichander, Jana Nayagan is partially inspired by the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari. The story follows a former police officer who becomes a public crusader against corruption and authoritarian power — themes that feel especially loaded given the timing of Vijay’s own political journey.
The film also marks Vijay’s on-screen send-off, backed by a stacked cast including Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and Nassar.
A four-decade career on screen
Vijay’s journey in film goes back over 40 years, starting as a child actor in 1984 before landing his first lead role in 1992. He built his stardom through the 2000s and 2010s with a string of commercial hits — Ghilli (2004), which became the first Tamil film to gross over ₹500 million domestically, Pokkiri (2007), Thuppakki (2012), Mersal (2017), Sarkar (2018), Bigil (2019), Master (2021) and Beast (2022) among them. His momentum carried into recent years too, with Varisu (2023), Leo (2023) — one of the highest-grossing Indian films that year at over ₹600 crore — and The Greatest of All Time (2024) all performing strongly at the box office. In February 2024, Vijay announced Jana Nayagan would be his final film, closing out a filmography that’s made him one of Tamil cinema’s most enduring leading men.
And locally, Malaysia’s already showing up strong
Distributor Malik Streams Corporation announced that Jana Nayagan had already crossed RM3 million in advance sales in Malaysia — announced just a day ahead of its official 23 July release — a clear sign the hype had carried over here too. In the film, Vijay plays a character billed as “The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay” — a title that only adds to the real-life political parallels to his own life.
